LINOLAB

Showing you the flexible future of linoleum -
a collaboration between Willem de Kooning Academy and Forbo.
This project explores the idea of experimenting. The tests were carried out with „Flexible Furniture Linoleum“. A newly developed material by forbo, a dutch floring company. By repeating experiments and digging deeper into details, an individual design direction and new way of manipulating the material was worked out.
During experimenting I discovered that trough applying heat, the material gets deformed permanently. This happens trough fastening up the oxidation process. This can be acchived trough cooking, holding over a open flame or baking the material.

I sharpened my design direction to solely work with tempering the material.
The goal became to manipulate the material without using any extra additive. This way the Linoleum gets shaped without creating a composite material and stays 100% recyclable.
For upsizing the samples a heating fan was used to apply heat to a large surface area. This was the starting point to develope a object which got exhibited during the Dutch Designweek 2021 from 16th oktober until the 24th of oktober in Eindhoven.
